Newborn dies in hospital, doctors angry but family members accused of negligence

Three doctors were allegedly attacked by the family of a patient who was upset over the death of an infant during an operation at a private hospital in North West Delhi’s Pitampura. Police said on Thursday that the relatives of the patient alleged that the infant died due to the negligence of the doctors. The relatives of the patient were later taken into custody.

A senior police officer said that during investigation it was found that a pregnant woman, 26, resident of Rani Bagh, was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday. He said that due to some complications, doctors operated on the woman and in spite of this the baby was born dead. Angered by this, the family members of the woman quarreled with the doctors and beat them up, the official said. He held them responsible for the infant’s death.

In the footage of the incident, a bunch of people are seen using offensive language for a doctor and beating him up. Later, the body of the infant has been sent to Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital for post-mortem, police said. He said that a doctor lodged a police complaint against the family members of the patient for assaulting the doctors and causing damage to the hospital. He said that in the MLC (Medico-Leger Case) report of the three doctors, it has been found that the injuries suffered by them were not serious.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North West) Usha Rangnani said that on the basis of the complaint of the doctor and the MLC, IPC sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 34 (multiple acts to further common intention) A case has been registered under Acts done by persons). A case has also been registered against the accused under the Delhi Medical Care Service Personnel and Medical Services Institute (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act, 2008, he said. Police said the accused have been taken into custody and the matter is being investigated.
