New Delhi
Many CSD canteens of the Indian Army will merge into each other. To save manpower and space, it has been decided to merge the canteens of the army units which are close to each other and remain in the same place (static units) for better use of infrastructure. The Quartermaster General Branch of the Army Headquarters issued an order to merge the Unit Run Canteen (URC) of CSD (Canteen Stores Department) operating in different military installations in the same station.

The order issued on May 24 stated that a URC of the static unit of the army (which does not have movement from one place to another), which has the largest number of beneficiaries, will be nominated in the merged URC and all other URCs will remain in suspended mode. It said that this order will not affect the URC of the army units whose rotation continues. They will get exemption from the merger. This order has been issued for all three services ie Arma, Navy and Airforce. The canteens that are meant for ex-servicemen will not be merged as there is more dependence on these canteens.

Which URC will remain and all the surrounding URC merges in it will be decided by the Board of Officers. The board consists of all stakeholders, formation commanders, local military authorities and station commanders. The URC that will be set up should be located in such a place so that everyone has the convenience of coming and going. It states that the URC which will be in suspended mode will keep its name and URC code with it. They will operate from the same, so even after the merge, there will be no need to change the software. However, CSD Depot will not forward any demand from these suspended URCs. Whatever will be a profit will be shared with all the URCs under the supervision of the concerned headquarters.

According to an Army official, those URCs which are in static units and close to each other will be merged. Which already has less baggage and almost no turnover. He said that once the URC is merged, everyone will get more facilities because then the infrastructure will improve and the canteens will be like a mall. Manpower will save more space, which can be put to better use. He informed that station commanders can decide how many canteens are needed in their station. Right now this largest store i.e. CSD has a total of 33 depots from Leh to Andaman. Which has around 2500 CSD cadres. Currently there are around 3700 URCs (URCs).
